Michigan Domestic Violence Statistics

Key points

  • Michigan State Police data record 67,958 domestic violence incidents, 70,749 offenders and 73,732 victims in Michigan for 2025.[1]
  • Those totals cover family and household relationships such as parents, children and siblings as well as spouses and dating partners, and an incident is counted when the investigating officer marks it as domestic violence.[2][3]
  • Of the 73,732 victims recorded for 2025, 50,819 were female (69.0%) and 22,805 were male (31.0%).[4]
  • Michigan circuit courts received 22,608 new domestic relationship PPO petitions from adults in 2023.[5]
  • The federal victimization survey estimated that 64.5% of domestic violence victimizations nationally were reported to police in 2024.[6]

Michigan State Police data record 67,958 domestic violence incidents in Michigan for 2025, with 73,732 victims and 70,749 offenders.[1] Those figures count incidents that an investigating officer marked as domestic violence, across family and household relationships as well as intimate partners.[2][3] They are counts of police incident records, and the table they come from does not report arrests, charges or convictions.[1]

Every State Police figure on this page is from the year-end ("frozen") data in the Crime in Michigan dashboard as read on 4 October 2026. The State Police revise their data after publication, so a number may be different if you look it up later.[1][7]

Where Michigan's numbers come from

Michigan law requires the chief of police of each city, village and township with a police department, and the sheriff of each county, to report domestic violence incident data to the Department of State Police.[8] The State Police issued a static Crime in Michigan annual report through the 2022 edition; starting in 2023, the annual report data is displayed in the Crime in Michigan dashboard.[9]

Three features of the data shape every number below:

  • The officer decides what is flagged. The dashboard states that "Domestic Violence is indicated by the investigating officer."[2]
  • Family violence is included. The relationships counted include spouse, parent, sibling, child, grandparent, in-law, step-relatives and other family members, along with dating, former dating and resident relationships.[3] The statewide total is therefore not a count of intimate partner violence.
  • Published figures change. The 2022 annual report gave 64,545 incidents and 69,765 victims for 2022; the dashboard now shows 66,991 incidents and 72,381 victims for the same year.[7]

Statewide totals, 2021 to 2025

202167,47869,96572,335[1]
202266,99169,57172,381[1]

202468,61671,28374,254[1]
202567,95870,74973,732[1]

Between the two most recent years, the recorded incident count went from 68,616 in 2024 to 67,958 in 2025, and the recorded victim count from 74,254 to 73,732.[1] The three columns differ because one incident can involve more than one victim or more than one offender; the dashboard notes that some incidents had multiple offenders but only one victim, or the reverse.[3]

Who is recorded as a victim and as an offender

Of the 73,732 victims recorded for 2025, 50,819 were female (69.0%), 22,805 were male (31.0%), and 108 were of unknown sex.[4]

Across the five years 2021 through 2025, the State Police recorded 353,905 offenders, of whom 248,269 were male (70.2%) and 105,546 were female (29.8%).[10] "Offender" in this data is the person identified in a police incident record. What the law says about gender is covered in Do the laws apply the same to men, women and same-sex couples?

How victims and offenders were related

For 2025, the most common victim-to-offender relationships in the State Police data were:

RelationshipCount, 2025
Dating (boyfriend or girlfriend)19,770[11]
Former dating8,481[11]
Spouse8,478[11]
Child7,791[11]
Parent7,684[11]
Child in common6,669[11]
Sibling5,375[11]
Resident (boyfriend or girlfriend)3,586[11]
Other family member2,304[11]
Ex-spouse1,029[11]

The relationship table totals 75,685, which is more than the number of victims, because of incidents with more than one offender.[11][3] The relationships that count for a criminal charge are a shorter list; see Who is covered: the domestic relationship.

What kinds of offenses were recorded

Most recorded victims were victims of non-aggravated assault: 50,413 of 73,732 in 2025, and 50,845 of 74,254 in 2024. Aggravated or felonious assault accounted for 12,049 victims in 2025 and 12,095 in 2024, and intimidation or stalking for 1,891 in 2025 and 1,703 in 2024.[12] These are police offense classifications in the State Police reporting system. The charges a prosecutor may file are described in Misdemeanor vs. felony domestic violence.

Weapons and injuries

In the 2025 data, the weapon category recorded for most victims was "personal weapons," at 43,709 of 73,732. A knife or cutting instrument was recorded for 2,771 victims, a blunt object for 1,587, a handgun for 1,094, a firearm of unknown type for 414, and asphyxiation for 371. No weapon was recorded for 9,160 victims, and the field was blank or not reportable for 9,589.[13]

For injuries, the 2025 data record no injury for 33,793 victims and an apparent minor injury for 29,149. The more serious categories were smaller: possible internal injury 571, other major injury 570, severe laceration 561, unconsciousness 305, apparent broken bones 147, and loss of teeth 30.[14]

The data record 73 victims with a fatal injury in 2025.[14][15] That is a count of victims whose injury was recorded as fatal in an incident flagged as domestic violence, across all of the family and household relationships listed above, not only intimate partners.[15][3] Whether a charge needs an injury at all is covered in Can you be charged without an injury?

West Michigan counties, 2024 and 2025

The county figures below are counts of recorded victims. Because an incident is counted only when the investigating officer marks it, a difference between two counties, or between two years in one county, can reflect how incidents were recorded as well as what happened.[2] This page does not rank counties or describe county trends.

Personal protection orders: filings and outcomes, 2023

Court figures come from a different source, the State Court Administrative Office's 2023 statewide caseload report. They count court cases, not people.

The courts also issued 234 PPOs against minors in 2023.[27] "Ex parte" means the judge ruled on the petition without first giving notice to the respondent. How those decisions are made is explained in Personal protection orders explained and Ex parte PPOs.

National context

Two federal agencies publish the national figures most often cited. They measure different things, and neither is a Michigan number.

Centers for Disease Control and Prevention

  • More than 1 in 3 women (nearly 43.5 million) and more than 1 in 6 men (20.7 million) have experienced contact sexual violence, physical violence, or stalking by an intimate partner during their lifetimes.[28]
  • Among women, 22.5% experienced physical violence by an intimate partner and 12.2% were stalked; among men, the figures were 13.7% and 4.2%.[28]
  • The CDC states that data from the National Violent Death Reporting System suggest that about 1 in 5 homicide victims are killed by an intimate partner.[28]

Bureau of Justice Statistics

The Bureau's National Crime Victimization Survey estimates victimizations from interviews. Its 2024 report defines domestic violence as violent victimizations committed by current or former intimate partners or family members.[29]

  • It estimated 1,110,040 domestic violence victimizations in 2024, a rate of 3.9 per 1,000 persons age 12 or older; the 2023 estimate was 1,165,890, or 4.1 per 1,000.[29]
  • It estimated that 416,580 persons experienced one or more violent victimizations by an intimate partner in 2024, compared with 296,260 in 2023.[30]
  • It estimated that 64.5% of domestic violence victimizations were reported to police in 2024, compared with 47.7% in 2023.[6]
  • Victims of intimate partner violence received assistance from a victim service provider in 22% of violent victimizations in 2024.[31]

Because the survey estimates that a share of victimizations is never reported to police, police-recorded data, such as the State Police counts above, is not a count of all domestic violence.[6]

What people get wrong

  • Treating incidents, victims and arrests as the same number. For 2025 the State Police recorded 67,958 incidents, 70,749 offenders and 73,732 victims, and none of the three is an arrest count.[1]
  • Calling the state total "intimate partner" violence. The total includes parents, children, siblings and other family members.[3]
  • Quoting the 2022 report's figure as current. The dashboard now shows higher numbers for 2022 than the 2022 annual report did.[7]
  • Assuming that only women are recorded as victims. The dashboard shows 31.0% of recorded victims in 2025 as male.[4]
  • Assuming that a typical recorded case involves a gun or a serious injury. A handgun was recorded for 1,094 of 73,732 victims in 2025, and no injury was recorded for 33,793.[13][14]
  • Assuming a PPO is automatic. In 2023, 10,353 domestic relationship petitions were dismissed or denied ex parte, against 12,298 orders issued ex parte.[5]

Other common misstatements about the law are collected in Michigan domestic violence myths. If you are looking at these numbers because of something happening to you, hotlines and local agencies are listed in Where to get help.

Common questions

How many domestic violence incidents are there in Michigan each year?

The Michigan State Police recorded 67,958 domestic violence incidents for 2025 and 68,616 for 2024, with 73,732 and 74,254 victims in those years.[1] These are police-recorded incidents that an investigating officer marked as domestic violence, read from the State Police dashboard on 4 October 2026.[2]

Do Michigan's domestic violence numbers count arrests or convictions?

No. The State Police table reports incidents, offenders and victims.[1] An incident is included when the investigating officer indicates that it was domestic violence and the relationship is one of the family, household or dating relationships on the State Police list.[2][3] A person recorded as an offender in that data has not necessarily been charged or convicted.

What share of domestic violence victims in Michigan are men?

In the State Police data for 2025, 22,805 of 73,732 recorded victims were male, which the dashboard shows as 31.0%, and 50,819 were female, shown as 69.0%.[4] The total covers family relationships as well as intimate partners, so it includes, for example, sons, fathers and brothers.[3]

How many domestic violence victims were recorded in Kent County?

The State Police recorded 4,108 domestic violence victims in Kent County for 2025 and 4,664 for 2024. Of the 2025 total, 3,181 were recorded as victims of non-aggravated assault and 640 as victims of aggravated or felonious assault.[16]

How many PPOs are filed in Michigan, and how many are granted?

In 2023 Michigan circuit courts received 34,622 new adult personal protection petitions, 22,608 of them in domestic relationships.[5] Among domestic relationship cases disposed of that year, 12,298 ended with an order issued ex parte and 10,353 were dismissed or denied ex parte.[5]

How much domestic violence is never reported to police?

The Bureau of Justice Statistics estimated that 64.5% of domestic violence victimizations in the United States were reported to police in 2024, compared with 47.7% in 2023.[6] That is a national survey estimate; this guide has no equivalent Michigan figure.
