When You Realize You May Be Facing Criminal Charges
For most people, it happens in a moment.
– A traffic stop becomes more serious than expected.
– A conversation with law enforcement takes a turn.
– A phone call raises questions you never expected to face.
And suddenly a thought hits you:
“Am I in serious trouble?”
If you are asking that question right now, you are not alone.
People from all walks of life find themselves facing criminal investigations or charges. Many have never been in trouble before. They may be professionals, parents, business owners, or students who suddenly find themselves navigating a frightening and unfamiliar situation.
In the first hours or days, emotions can run high — and the decisions made during this time can have a lasting impact.
Understanding what you are experiencing — and what steps to take next — can help you regain control of the situation.
Shock and Disbelief
“This can’t really be happening.”
The first reaction is often shock.
You may find yourself replaying the situation repeatedly, wondering how things escalated so quickly.
Many people initially believe:
It must be a misunderstanding
The situation will probably resolve itself
It cannot be as serious as it sounds
Unfortunately, criminal investigations and charges rarely resolve themselves without careful legal attention. What happens during the early stages can shape everything that follows.
Fear of Consequences
“What could this do to my life?”
As reality begins to settle in, fear often follows.
People begin worrying about consequences they never imagined facing:
Possible criminal charges
The risk of jail time
Damage to their reputation
Losing their job or professional license
The impact on their family
These concerns are completely understandable. The criminal justice system can feel intimidating — especially for someone who has never dealt with it before.
Confusion and Information Overload
“I don’t understand what’s happening.”
Police procedures, legal paperwork, and unfamiliar terminology can quickly become overwhelming.
Many people are unsure about:
Whether they should answer questions from investigators
What their legal rights actually are
What the next step in the process might be
Whether the situation is already out of their control
Without clear guidance, it is easy to make decisions in these moments that unintentionally make things worse.
Isolation and Shame
“I can’t believe I’m in this situation.”
Another common reaction is isolation.
Many people feel embarrassed or ashamed and hesitate to talk about what is happening — even with close friends or family members.
Facing a legal crisis alone often increases stress and uncertainty. Getting experienced guidance early can provide both clarity and peace of mind.
Urgency and the Need for Protection
“What I do next could matter.”
At some point, most people recognize that the next decisions they make could affect the outcome of the situation.
Questions often arise such as:
Should I talk to the police?
Should I answer questions or decline to comment?
How serious could this become?
Is there still time to protect myself?
Early legal guidance can often prevent small problems from becoming much larger ones.
Speak With a Defense Attorney Now
If you are concerned about a possible investigation or criminal charges, speaking with an experienced defense attorney early can help you understand your rights and options.
If Law Enforcement Has Contacted You
If law enforcement has already contacted you — or you believe they may soon — it is important to proceed carefully.
Many people assume that cooperating fully and answering questions will help clear things up. Unfortunately, statements made during early conversations with investigators can sometimes be misunderstood or used in ways that were never intended.
Even well-meaning individuals can unintentionally create problems for themselves simply by trying to explain a situation without legal guidance.
Before speaking with investigators, signing documents, or answering detailed questions, it is often wise to understand your rights and your options.
A brief conversation with an experienced criminal defense attorney can help you avoid decisions that might complicate your situation later.
Then Read This...
You are not the first person in this situation...
If you are suddenly facing serious criminal charges in West Michigan, your emotional state would likely be intense and layered. Most people experience the early moments of a situation like this in very similar ways.
Panic Creates Mistakes 😳
The first reaction is often shock.
You may find yourself thinking, “How did this even happen?”
Many people feel:
Surprised at how quickly things escalated
Disoriented by unfamiliar legal procedures and terminology
Concerned that their normal life suddenly feels unstable
Even confident, capable people can feel temporarily knocked off balance when the legal system enters their life unexpectedly.
The First 24–72 Hours Can Change Everything ⚖️
During the early stages, the situation often feels unresolved and unpredictable. It becomes difficult to relax because you know something serious may be unfolding.
What many people don’t realize is that the decisions made during the first 24 to 72 hours can dramatically influence what happens next.
Saying the wrong thing, waiting too long to seek help, or trying to handle the situation alone can create complications that are difficult to undo.
Your Fork-in-the-Road Moment 🛡️
At this point, most people face two very different paths.
One path is to react emotionally and hope the problem somehow resolves itself.
The other path is to slow down, get clear guidance, and begin making deliberate decisions that protect you and your future.
This is where experienced legal counsel can make a critical difference.

About Shawn...
Attorney Shawn James Haff has been a lifelong resident of West Michigan. Shawn was born in Grand Rapids, Michigan. He graduated from Hudsonville High School in 1993 and went on to Grand Valley State University, where he earned two Bachelor’s degrees in Political Science and Legal Studies. While attending GVSU, Shawn served on the Student Senate and made the Dean’s List on a regular basis.
Seeing the systemic injustices within our political and judicial systems, Shawn took his passion to one of the most respected training grounds for trial lawyers: Thomas M. Cooley Law School. There, he received an Honors scholarship, a Certification in Litigation, and earned his Juris Doctorate while consistently making the Dean’s List.

No. In West Michigan, as in the rest of the country, anything you say can and will be used against you. Police officers are trained to gather evidence, not to exonerate you. Even if you are completely innocent, you should politely decline to answer questions and state that you wish to speak with your attorney, Shawn Haff, immediately. We will handle all communication with law enforcement to ensure your words aren’t twisted.
The difference is life-altering. While a misdemeanor can lead to up to a year in jail, a felony conviction in Michigan carries much harsher penalties, including prison time and the permanent loss of certain rights, such as firearm ownership. Furthermore, a felony on your record makes finding employment in West Michigan significantly harder. Whether you are in Grand Rapids or Paw Paw, Shawn Haff treats every charge with a sense of urgency to prevent a permanent mark on your record.
Police cannot search your vehicle without a warrant, your consent, or “probable cause.” If you were pulled over and an officer searched your car without a valid reason, that evidence may be inadmissible in court. Shawn Haff specializes in challenging illegal searches and seizures. If your rights were violated during a stop in West Michigan, we will file the necessary motions to suppress that evidence and push for a dismissal of your case.
